1. Check zoning with the city or county before you sign anything

   If you will operate from premises, including a space you are about to lease Ask whether your specific use is permitted at the exact address, before money changes hands. A zoning answer after a signed lease is information; before, it is a decision you can still make.
2. Go to the board that licenses your trade It sets its own requirements and fees; no other office can answer for it. As of 2026-08-11: barbering requires 1,500 school hours or an 18-month apprenticeship (NAC 643); the exam is $100 (NAC 643.070). The only printed apprentice fee is $60, on the registration-certificate request — the $85 figure on tracker sites appears on no official form. source
3. Have these ready
   • Proof of your qualification, and any exam results the board requires
   • Employment or supervision history, if your board requires supervised hours
   • Whether Nevada recognizes a license you already hold elsewhere
   As of 2026-08-11: Nevada contractor “C” exams through PSI cost $95 per portion — CMS $95, trade $95, or $140 when the second exam taken is the CMS. The handyman exemption caps a job at $1,000 labor and materials combined (NRS 624.031(6)). source

4. The board license is not the whole job

   It is separate from the state business license and from the local one - a licensed practitioner running a business still needs both.
