2. Have these ready
   • Your IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter, or where you are in getting one
   • An active SAM.gov registration and the UEI it issues — federal awards key on it
   • The program the money funds, with a budget you can defend line by line
3. Secure your IRS 501(c)(3) determination Federal funders want the IRS determination letter, or a credible plan and timeline for getting one; it establishes you as an eligible tax-exempt organization. Open
4. Register in SAM.gov and get your UEI Federal awards key on the UEI SAM issues, and the registration must be renewed every year or an otherwise winning application is disqualified. Open
5. Register your organization on Grants.gov Grants.gov is where federal applications are submitted; the organization registration is separate from SAM and takes its own time to clear. Open
